Commercial electricity in Nunavut

Customer type decides the rate, and a fuel stabilization rider can change it.

In Nunavut, Qulliq Energy Corporation is the sole power utility, and the rate depends on the customer type: non-government commercial and government commercial accounts pay different prices per kWh. A fuel stabilization rider can add a charge or credit. The table below names the source for every fact and the date it was checked.

Rates by customer type
QEC’s customer rates page lists Non-Government Commercial customers at 62.08 cents per kWh and Government Commercial customers at 105.33 cents per kWh. It says commercial customers are billed for actual meter usage for the month plus a base or demand charge, and that the rates shown are effective as of October 1, 2023.Source: Qulliq Energy Corporation: Customer rates
Demand meters

Fuel Stabilization Rate
QEC keeps a Fuel Stabilization Rate Fund to offset the difference between actual fuel prices and the fuel price used to set current rates. When the fund is expected to pass plus or minus one million dollars within a six-month period, QEC applies to the Minister for a fuel rider charge or refund in cents per kWh. It lists a March 2026 application among its recent ones.Source: Qulliq Energy Corporation: Fuel Stabilization Rate

What matters for a business account

Qulliq Energy Corporation publishes customer and billing information for Nunavut. Its categories distinguish commercial from government-commercial and other customer types. The legal account category and bill components must be established before using a unit price.

A public-housing or other residential charge is not a business benchmark. Likewise, a government-commercial schedule should not be assumed to apply to a private operator. Check the exact account designation and any applicable base or demand charge directly with the serving utility.

For a remote business budget, document the billing period, energy used, actual billed demand and any adjustments. Keep the original account details privately with the business; this website’s public guides and local calculator do not need meter identifiers or personal service addresses.

Your Nunavut bill-review checklist

  1. Confirm private commercial versus government-commercial classification.
  2. Retain applicable base and demand charges, not just the unit price.
  3. Verify any subsidy or credit separately rather than assuming eligibility.

Turn the statement into a useful calculation

Record the billing period and electricity consumption in kWh. Use the billed demand from the statement where a demand charge applies; do not assume average consumption identifies the peak. Enter the fixed and variable components in their published units, and identify which adjustments are already included.

The Canadian calculator lets you declare energy blocks, billed demand, any included demand allowance, fixed charges and a tax assumption. Its subtotal is a model of those entries. It does not select your tariff, decide whether a business qualifies, reproduce every rider or certify a billing error.

When comparing two periods, record changes in operating hours, production, occupancy, heating and equipment. Those observations help explain a movement in consumption without inventing a market price or assuming an error. Keep the actual account and source documents privately with your business records.

The publication and the account’s terms control applicability. A provider directory is not a province-wide offer or a guarantee that the same tariff applies to another meter.

Questions business owners ask

Can a Nunavut business use a residential or subsidised price as its commercial rate?

Only where the applicable account rules actually establish it. Customer categories, subsidies and business charges must be checked directly; a published residential figure is not a commercial offer.

Is a government commercial rate the same as a business rate in Nunavut?

No. QEC lists Non-Government Commercial and Government Commercial customers at different rates, and a government commercial schedule should not be assumed to apply to a private operator.

What is the Fuel Stabilization Rate?

It is a fund QEC keeps to offset the difference between actual fuel prices and the fuel price used to set current electricity rates. When the fund passes a threshold, QEC can apply to the Minister for a rider that adds a charge or a credit in cents per kWh.

Are these business tariffs or residential examples?

This guide is written for commercial bill review. Actual eligibility and charge inputs must come from the account’s business schedule. Residential examples and U.S. state averages are not substituted for it.
