HAUSE / CANADIAN BUSINESS TOOL

Know each component. Understand the total.

A transparent CAD workbench for the charges on your statement. Original assumptions are illustrative; replace them with your business inputs.

This Canadian commercial electricity calculator multiplies energy in kWh by entered energy prices, adds tariff-defined billed demand and fixed charges, then applies a declared tax assumption. All money is CAD. It does not select a tariff, convert U.S. averages, determine eligibility or reproduce adjustments that are not entered.

Your declared inputs

Use this billing period’s actual block allowance and billed demand. No account number, address or original bill is needed.

Source-backed examples, with their limits attached

Each optional example fills one utility’s published energy, demand-allowance and service components for one rate class. Where a tariff bills demand, the example uses billed demand after the tariff’s own definition; it does not calculate that demand from equipment readings. Additional tax defaults to zero so an example does not invent your tax treatment. Review each field and any missing component against the actual statement.

  • NB Power General Service I: original NB Power publication ↗, source effective 2026-04-14, checked 2026-10-29, recheck by 2026-11-28. General Service I listed components, including the published energy variance-account charge. Enter tariff-defined billed demand (the greater of maximum kW or 90% of maximum kVA). Tax, eligibility, credits and other adjustments are not inferred.
  • Maritime Electric General Service (code 232): original Maritime Electric publication ↗, source effective 2026-08-01, checked 2026-10-29, recheck by 2026-11-28. General Service rate, code 232, per billing period, as listed in the rate schedule effective August 1, 2026. The published rate includes the Energy Cost Adjustment Mechanism. Enter tariff-defined billed demand (the greater of maximum kW or 90% of maximum kVA). Tax, eligibility and other adjustments are not inferred.
  • Manitoba Hydro General Service Small, non-demand (single phase): original Manitoba Hydro publication ↗, source effective 2026-01-01, checked 2026-10-29, recheck by 2026-11-28. General Service Small, non-demand, single phase: utility-owned transformation and billing demand not exceeding 50 kVA, rates effective January 1, 2026. The basic monthly charge is $21.57 single phase; three phase is $35.04, so change the fixed charge for a three-phase service. The first 11,000 kWh are monthly, so use a billing period of about a month. Taxes and any other adjustments are not inferred.
  • Nova Scotia Power Small General (Rate 10): original Nova Scotia Power publication ↗, source effective 2026-05-01, checked 2026-10-29, recheck by 2026-11-28. Small General tariff, Rate 10, rates updated as of May 1, 2026: a $22.00 monthly base charge, 19.804 cents per kWh for the first 200 kWh a month and 17.997 cents for the rest. Nova Scotia Power applies Fuel Adjustment Mechanism and Demand Side Management Cost Recovery Rider charges or credits in cents per kWh within the energy charge on the bill; those are not in this preset. The 200 kWh block is monthly, so use a billing period of about a month. Taxes are not inferred.

An example is withheld for a billing period that starts before its tariff took effect, has not ended, or is read after its recheck date. Edited numbers are user assumptions based on an example, not a verified new tariff, and a recheck date is not a guarantee that prices remain unchanged. The downloadable worksheet retains the inputs, formula version and source context without personal identifiers.

The calculation in plain language

First-block energy is the smaller of total kWh and the declared block allowance; a zero allowance selects a flat rate. Remaining energy uses the next-block rate. Chargeable demand is billed kW minus any included kW allowance, with a floor of zero. Add fixed charges, then apply the entered tax percentage to that modeled subtotal. Currency values are displayed in CAD; no exchange-rate conversion or U.S. benchmark enters this calculation.

Compare this output with a statement only when dates, charge scope and units match. A difference is a question to investigate, not proof of an error or guaranteed savings. Consult the serving utility if the tariff relies on data this workbench does not model.
